Menstrual & Menopausal Mental Health
Menstrual Health Conditions
Chronic menstrual health conditions can take many forms, such as Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Polycystic Metabolic-Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) formerly known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and more. These conditions have complex hormonal and metabolic aspects that can affect reproductive health, metabolism, and overall well-being. Symptoms can vary widely and may include chronic pain, fatigue, irregular menstrual cycles, changes in weight, acne, hair growth or hair loss, fertility concerns, and hormonal changes.
The impact of these health concerns extends beyond physical symptoms. Living with ongoing health concerns, navigating medical care, changes in body image, fertility challenges, and uncertainty can affect mood, self-esteem, relationships, and quality of life. Our work focuses on the emotional and psychological aspects of navigating menstrual health conditions and the ways they can affect your sense of self and daily life.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
We specialize in providing support for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). PMDD is a condition where an individual experiences intense physical and mental symptoms in response to normal hormone fluctuations before the menstrual cycle. These symptoms may include mood swings, depression, anxiety, irritability, sleep/appetite changes, joint/muscle pain, and more. PMDD is different than Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and requires specific treatment to support individuals with the disorder. Curious about PMDD? Click here to learn more.
Additionally, some individuals may experience Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME) of other mental or physical health conditions. This can show up as a worsening of symptoms associated with these conditions before the onset of menstruation. An example of PME is the worsening of depression symptoms during the premenstrual period for a person with Major Depressive Disorder.
Menopause & Perimenopause
“The change” can come along with changes in your mental health. Menopause and Perimenopause can have complex systemic impacts on your body, mind, and lifestyle. These may include impacts to sleep, body temperature regulation, energy, cognition/brain fog, irregular menstruation, skin changes, and much more. Additionally, these hormone shifts during can lead to changes in mood, leading to mood swings, depression, anxiety, and more. Some individuals may also experience the worsening of existing mental health conditions.
Connecting with mental and physical health care providers who are informed of the ranging impacts of Menopause/ Perimenopause can be an essential part of navigating this transition. Therapy can be a key piece in holistic Menopause/Perimenopause support, providing care for your mind along with your body.
