What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a mental health condition where an individual experiences distressing and unwanted thoughts and worries. The individual then engages in an outward behavior or mental act, known as a compulsion, to try to neutralize the anxiety associated with the obsession. This creates a repetitive cycle of obsessions and compulsions that can become challenging and disruptive in one’s life.

OCD can appear differently for each individual. The focus or themes of obsessive-compulsive fears may vary widely. Some OCD fears may even seem frightening or taboo.

Some common obsessive-compulsive themes are:

  • Contamination, germs, and/or cleanliness

  • Relationships

  • Organization or symmetry

  • Harm to self or others

  • Religion and spirituality

  • And many more

OCD looks different for everyone. At Organic Counseling, we are committed to creating a space where you can receive OCD treatment personalized to your specific needs and goals.

Treatment Options

Exposure and Response Prevention

Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy, also known as ERP, is recognized as the gold-standard therapeutic treatment for OCD. ERP involves gradually exposing an individual to the focus of their fear without engaging in compulsions, rituals, or avoidance. This is done to slowly desensitize an individual to the target of their anxiety.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, is a commonly used therapy to treat OCD. ACT is a therapy that focuses on changing our relationship with our thoughts and emotions to support us in living a life more aligned with our values. ACT has been shown to be supportive in the treatment of OCD, particularly in conjunction with ERP.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, also known as CBT, focuses on changing and coping differently with our thoughts and actions. CBT is a well-established treatment for OCD. ERP is a type of specialized CBT for treating OCD, anxiety, and other disorders.
